Overview
Fifty years ago, the first Portal opened in the center of Wolfsburg, Germany. Not long after, they began opening all over the world. The news outcry claimed it was an alien invasion and they were almost entirely correct. The portals lead out of a slowly crumbling dimension: one that collapsed soon after. No one in, no one out. No way to return the creatures that poured out to their original home.
A peculiar effect of the portals is that a large portion of human population is transformed by their presence. Some simply shifted into beasts of the other dimension to become known as Re-Spawn. Others were triggered with strange powers without turning, to become known as Jinxed.
The first twenty years or so were spent in war, with great casualty on all sides. It was only once the first ShiftSpawn was discovered that there were steps made towards understanding and peace. Though the Portal Spawn do not have a leadership, it is prudent to settle disputes rather than seek to destroy the existing life on Earth.
The last thirty years have been spent in relative peace, or something close to it. Large cities have turned into sprawling constructions that are working towards recovering their former technological glories, though inter-city-state trade is still difficult. Each city has its own government. Surrounding the inhabited areas are barriers of light and sound set to frequencies that disable and disorient Spawn in order to keep them out.
The Spawn themselves have busied themselves in the Outlands, flourishing and building their own new home. Around the portals, growth is near overwhelming, flora consuming the places where skyscrapers used to be.
